Chapter 9
The sound of voices laughing woke me from a sound slumber. Sitting up in bed, I rubbed sleep from my eyes and looked out the window.
I shrugged off the fog of doziness and noticed it was getting dark. Shit, I had slept all day!
Then I had to untangle myself from a quilt I was sure had not been over me when I fell asleep.
What the heck is wrong with me? I never sleep this much. I felt better than I had in the last few days. Maybe I had just been worn out. Or maybe the magic I was using around Tar was taking more mojo than I was used to. Scooting out of the quilt and nest of blankets to get the end of the bed brought me to the realization my feet were bare. What the hell happened to my shoes?
I hunted for my missing shoes. I was sure they were still on my feet when Iâd fallen asleep. Which meant someone, perhaps Marshal, had taken them off for me. Yep, it was Marshal, as this quilt was the one we bought at the auction for some charity when he was running for Sheriff.
He had covered me up and taken off my shoes.
I fought back a lump in my throat as I held the hideous quilt with messed-up stitching and what might have been intended as a Southwest pattern, but turned into random lines against my chest.
The sound of his patrol car starting up got me moving out the bedroom door barefoot. The hallway was dark but the sound of a television from the living room drew me on.
I stubbed my toe on the gas connector poking out of the floor. âOuch!â
The voices stopped speaking, and the laughter cut off at my cry of pain. I limped on into the living room, pausing with my eyes squinted as I left the dark hallway.
As my vision cleared, I saw Tar sitting beside Amy on the couch.
The coffee table had three pizza boxes on it and paper plates stacked to the side.
âHey, Sis. How did you sleep?â Amy asked as I moved past them to the closed front door. I knew from the receding sounds of the patrol car that I was too late. I opened the door anyway just in time to see his tail lights turn the corner. Insufferable man.
I tried to be angry at him, but the confused emotions roiling around in me left me numb.
I sighed, turning back to the living room and shutting the door softly behind me. I seemed to sigh more often of late, and wondered if it had anything to do with the tiredness. Moving to the coffee table, I opened a pizza box at random and was rewarded with the sight of an almost whole taco pizza. The lettuce was still green and not wilted, so I knew it had not been here long. âYou get any sleep, Amy?â I asked, ignoring the rerun of Gilliganâs Island playing on the television.
